. INDICATION FOR MECHANICAL VENTILATION
acute hypercapnia
minute ventilation > 10 L/min
ratio of respiratory rate to tidal volume ≥ 100
vital capacity < 10-15 ml/kg
maximal inspiratory pressure more positive than -20 cmH2O
dead space to tidal volume fraction ≥ 0.60
acute hypoxemia
clinical instability
need for hyperventilation therapy
2. CLASSIFICATION OF VENTILATOR THERAPY
1) Non-Invasive ventilation
(1) Positive pressure ventilation with facial mask
CPAP, BiPAP
(2) Negative pressure ventilation
with chest shell, pneumowrap etc..
2) Invasive ventilation
positive pressure ventilation with endotracheal tube.
